PREM NIKETHAN MEANS “HOME OF LOVE”.

Prem Nikethan literally means “Home of Love”. It is the name of a facility built in 1994 and managed by nuns of Saint Anna’s congregation in Ibrahimpatnam, close to Vijayawada. There are 25 children and youngsters with special needs, abandoned or orphaned, with mental retardation, are being taken care of and treated.
Supporting Prem Nikethan means not abandoning these children and youngsters with special needs anymore but providing them with comprehensive treatment, a decent life and love.

SOME FACTS.

As per the country’s latest statistics, an estimated 2.21 percent of the Indian population has a disability; a humbling figure of over 26 million people. A person can face disability — intellectually and physically — at any point in their life from medical complications or life-altering events.
Social groups wise analysis shows 2.45 per cent of the total disabled population belong to the Scheduled Castes (SC), 2.05 per cent to the Scheduled Tribes (ST) and 2.18 per cent to other than SC/ST. Disability increases/raises disparity: according to the World Bank, disabled children have a school dropout rate 5 times greater than that of children from one of the most disadvantaged caste of Indian society, 39% of disabled children never attended school and 45% of them is illiterate; because of all of this, it is difficult for them to enter the labour market/ find their place at work and being autonomous.

OUR INTERVENTION.

We restructure, restore and support the administration of the Centre with the furniture of materials/supplies and the payment of a part of the salaries of external employees, who work as educators and physiotherapists. Almost all of the children are part of/ are involved in the distance support/ child sponsorship project done by Care&Share.
Prem Niketan’s walls of the Home were dilapidated and, in some parts, they completely collapsed. Thieves and dangerous animals could easily enter the playgrounds of children and the interior spaces. Children affected by mental retardation would walk away any minute, exposing them-selves to extremely serious threats. Other planned interventions/ actions were the restoration and the supply of the physiotherapy room with the relative equipment and the securing of the recreation area.
